How do Stem Cells treat IgA Nephropathy? To know the work of Stem Cells in
treating IgA nephropathy, we need to know the basic knowledge of IgA Nephropathy
first.
IgA Nephropathy is an autoimmune disorder characterized by abnormally obvious
IgA deposition as well as antigen-antibody complexes in the mesangial area of
the kidney. At present, the causes of IgA and immune complexes deposition in the
mesangial area of the kidney are poorly understood nor the causes of glomerulus
injury by IgA and immune complexes deposition in the mesangial area of the
kidney. However, IgA and immune complexes that deposit in the mesangial area of
the kidney induces pathological changes of the renal mesangial cells.
The five renal intrinsic cells are glomerular epithelial cells, glomerular
endothelial cells, renal mesangial cells, renal tubular epithelial cells and
renal interstitial fibroblast. Pathological damage of the kidney is the
pathological damage of these renal intrinsic cells. When IgA Nephropathy
attacks, renal mesangial cells are firstly affected. They are stimulated to
proliferate. That’s why IgA Nephropathy is also known as Mesangial Proliferative
IgA Nephropathy.
Damage of renal mesangial cells will affect the other renal intrinsic cells;
thereby the normal function of the kidney cannot be maintained and a series of
symptoms will come out, for example, hematuria.
When Stem Cells are introduced inside the body, because of the homing ability
of the Stem Cells, they will go to the kidney through blood circulation and then
stay there. Stem Cells are a group of undifferentiated cells therefore they will
not be rejected by our immune system. Stem Cells in the kidney are “required” to
differentiate into various renal intrinsic cells in order to sustain the normal
function of our kidneys. The earlier the Stem Cells are given, the better the
efficacy will be. Progression of IgA Nephropathy differs from one another. For
some patients whose IgA Nephropathy progresses rapidly, they should receive
effective treatment as early as they can so their kidney function can be
maintained in a maximum level. The Stem Cells treatment also will get a better
result if the patients can receive it in the early period of the disease.
With the progressing of IgA Nephropathy, kidney functions will continue to
drop. No treatment can totally cure kidney diseases, as well as Stem Cells.
However, compared with other treatments, Stem Cells are safer. Stem Cells can
bring neither rejection nor side effects to the receptor.
