Potassium in human body is unable to excrete promptly due to the reduction of urination, which is responsible for hyperpotassemia--excessive potassium retention in human body.
When Kidney Failure patients are complicated with hyperpotassemia, low potassium diet should be given. There's no need to limit potassium intake anymore as long as urine output is over 1000ml or serum potassium returns to normal.
Cantaloupe is rich in potassium. The ability of processing potassium decreases resulting from glomerular filtration rate declines along with renal tubular function recedes in patients with Renal Failure. Under this circumstance, high potassium foods such as cantaloupe would trigger bradycardia or even accident occurs. Therefore, patients with Kidney Failure should better avoid eating cantaloupe in oliguria stage.
